Dear friends,

I would like to remark briefly, that there was a great 16th century lutenist living in
Lithvania: Valentin Bakfark. As a matter of fact he spent much of his "Polish
years" not on Polish territory, but on Lithvanian. At that time Lithvania belonged to
the Polish Crown, and the Polish king, Sigismund August II. had his court from
1551 on rather in Vilna/Vilnius. Bakfark first wife, whom he married 1551 in
Cracow, belonged to a lithvanian family. Bakfrark purchased a house in 1559 in
Vilnius and he or maybe his wife had some estate also around Vilnius. Al this has
been devastated about the beginning of 1566. There are much speculations around
why it happened, but the exeact reason is still not clear. There are no documents
to prove any of the assumptions.

Unfortunately so far I was not able to learn about traces of Bafkark in Lithvanian
documents.

Best wishes, Peter Kiraly---------------------
