Dear Vance, The Lute Society has just published the complete lute works of Philip van Wilder edited by David Humphreys. The edition was on sale for the first time last Saturday at the Lute Society meeting in London, and Ian Harwood gave a short talk about it. If you send an e-mail to Chris Goodwin, the Society Administrator, at [EMAIL PROTECTED] , I'm sure he'd help you out.
The edition comprises 10 items for solo lute, one lute duet, and eight songs. There is some duplication, because some of them are alternative versions of the same piece: Je file (three song settings), Ma pauvre bourse (three solo intabulations), Pour vous aimer (solo intabulation and lute song). I have to say that I think some of Philip van Wilder's music is really lovely, and I would recommend buying this edition. As far as England is concerned, there is not a lot which has survived from the first half of the 16th century, so it is nice to have it available in a cheap edition. All the music in the new Lute Society involves lute tablature. For some years there has been an edition of Philip van Wilder's songs in score: Jane A. Bernstein (ed.) _Philip van Wilder, Collected Works_, Masters and Monuments of the Renaissance, 2 vols (New York, 1991). If you particularly want facsimiles you would need to get hold of the Boethius facsimile editions of The Willoughby Lute Book, The Brogyntyn Lute Book, and The Marsh Lute Book, together with other sources which are not yet available in print, e.g. Lbl Add 4900, Cu Dd 2.11, and a couple of Paston lute manuscripts. Best wishes, Stewart McCoy. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Vance Wood" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "lute list" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, November 21, 2003 1:50 AM Subject: Phlip VanWilder > Lute netters: > > On a previous message someone mentioned a facsimile of Philip Van Wilder's > Lute music.
