I would recommend the following simple pieces:

Works by Hans Newsidler, some found in the Lute Society's edition by Martin
Shepard, some from the LS's edition by Stewart McCoy.

Any of a number of works published by Attaignant in 1529: dances and also
intabulations such as Tant que vivray

After a long time away from Elizabethan music, I've come back to enjoy
seemingly overfamiliar works like Greensleeves, Packington's Pound, Watkin's
Ale, The Sick Tune, The Hunt's Up, and Dargesson.

Perhaps my favorite tune of all, even after many play-throughs, is Robin.
The anonymous version in one of the Cambridge MS's is very nice (sorry I
can't be more specific), but Nigel North plays it on his new CD, Go From My
Window.

And, don't forget the Scottish works that Ronn McFarlane published which
accompany his CD, the Scottish Lute vol. 1!
