We had a thread on that, because Hopkinson Smith had named one Holborne
galliard with that name in his concert here in Helsinki. No one seemed to
know, where he got this name for the piece...
I reported Wed, 19 Nov 2003 00:42:09 +0200 (EET).
"Today Hoppie Smith had his first lute recital in Finland! He played here
in Helsinki his new and highly interesting English lute music program:
Anthony Holborne
...
Mad Dog
..."
Then after some questions in the list, I wrote on Thu, 20 Nov 2003
22:52:26 +0200 (EET):
"I was also wondering this "Mad dog"! I don't know where Hoppie has got
this name, but anyhow the piece he played with this odd name was the
VERY beautiful galliard, RadS 49(*. It comes from the Dd.5.78.3, f. 45r.
(The second of Matthew Holmes Lute Books, Cambridge University Library
Dd 5.78.3.)
*) Rainer aus dem Spring Number 49."
And finally Gran Crona gave also the tabulature of the beautiful piece

But the naming this piece to "Mad Dog" seems still to be a secret of Hoppie!
All the best
