Joachim,

I am cleaning up old mail and came on this one from a few weeks ago.

My compliments to the shepherd/cowherd. But I question whether the lute
could work so well. (Note the attitude you mention of the pigeon). Perhaps
there is a matter of the "beasts of the field" versus the beasts of the
forest. Those with horns, and their ovine friends, might prefer the music of
the horn. I haven't tested on pigeons yet, but my whistle draws my cat (not,
I think, because she likes it - but because it is annoying). She is quite
comfortable with the lute (I haven't informed her that the old stringing was
"cat gut"). And I don't have any cows, sheep or horns - so can't test that
hypothesis. Nor being in the countryside can I test the whistles on pigeons,
but next time I have to wait for my lady at her place in NYC I'll bring a
whistle and see if I attract or repel pigeons (or just get s@@t upon).

Enjoyed your comments, I leave them below on purpose as they are a bit stale
on the list so you might not remember what you said.

Best, Jon

Dear all,

Years ago when I was playing in an early music ensemble I began to double on
wind instruments. On a visit to my parents I took a cornet with me and then
went into the fields to practice because I didn't want do disturb my
parents. Attracted a large crowd of cows which followed me as far as the
fence allowed (I was walking while practicing). Think I'm still famous among
the horned animals [the shepherds and cowherds having stopped playing their
reed pipes long ago they must be starved of music] although I gave up the
cornet shortly after to concentrate on the lute. Suppose when I would take
my lute and play it in the open a pigeon would come and tear up the
instrument.

What did Basho write:

Lonely lute outside.
Joe's playing a Dowland piece.
Fast: close the windows!

Cheers, Joachim Luedtke
