i put little white dabs of fingernail polish on the
neck of my fretless oud where frets would be (real men
use "pearl bliss") to indicate if i'm still in tune. 
i refer to them constantly out of the corner of my eye
- especially when singing and playing at the same time
- and would miss them if they weren't there.
