re: suicide - last week's economist has an article on
suicides which states that suicide rates in britain
are down to 84 per million, lowest since the middle of
WWII. italy, greece and portugal have low suicide
rates but spain and ireland rates are high - due, the
article states, to religion and tradition "loosing
their grip."
the article calls this "surprising" as drug and
alcohol addiction, divorce, uncertain economic
conditions, etc., etc. are all on the rise.
the authors of the article attribute this drop in
suicide rates to a lack of means to do so.
"suicide rates are high in countries where there are
lots of guns, like america, switzerland and norway,
and among professionals who have access to drugs such
as doctors and veterinary surgeons."
so ... to continue with this idea that lute music
offers a deterrent to suicide, i'd say yes - providing
the medicine cabinet has been cleaned out or placed
under lock and key and both performing musician and
adoring public aren't packing weapons.
