Dear Ed, Martin and All: My experience with various lutes suggests that roped gut is a pretty poor lute string -- dull, quiet, no overtones, no sustain -- in general agreement with others' comments. It is more effective, I think, with bowed instruments -- vielles and rebecs. Any violists out there care to comment?
