I am no art historian, but I must (IMHO) say that there seems to be as
much wrong with this picture as there is right: the perspective of the bouts
is perfect; the perspective of the tuning head is twisted; a supplementary
bridge too narrow and flat to match the fretboard.
Why would an extra, or for that matter broken, bridge be left lying on the
soundboard of the instrument where it could rattle most unpleasntly? Either
the thing had sympathetic strings not depicted (nor unheard of), or perhaps
this segment of art was done by an apprentice to Viti (a not uncommon practice).
Regards,
Leonard Williams
When some ancient people received reports of huge skulls with one large
hole in the center of the "face", they concluded that the large nasal opening
of what turned out to be an elephant skull was an eye socket--hence there must
be cyclopeans out there. With all due respect, I think we need a more
accurately detailed picture before drawing (no pun intended) conclusions.

bridge, the way it is on the picture. However, i don't know what the
reputation of this artist Viti is but i can do better than him even while
sleeping (am joking, not being rude-hehe). Notice that his perspective of
the pegbox of the instument is completely twisted already: the pegbox is
twisted and it looks as if it should belong to another viola that is seen
much more from the right side view. I like the drawing though, doesn't
matter the "faults" :))

yes, I agree, and noticed, that the peg head is not the best of renderings.
It's foreshortening is also either a bit off or it might actually better
coincide with and aqurately reflect a peghead originally designed to hold
only 4 or 5 pegs, hence it is actually shorter in scale than it could or
should be.
The bow hair edge might be tucked under a bit more too.
We'll see, who knows. You'all could be right.
