I have been known to grow a beard for the Summer, (April to September), for 17th C. re-enactments. I sport a Van Dyke style with moustache. Most of the pictures of historical lute-players I have seen show similar.
Some of my friends portray Scottish clansmen of that period. With their flowing kilts and wild 'face-fungus', they have been called 'Women with beards'! With regards to a beard-tax, growing a beard for only half the year, I would want a six-month tax rebate! I still have to buy razors!
