Brown is about printed music before 1600. Concerning manuscripts one should consult Meyer's "Sources manuscrites en tablature", but the Great Britain Volume is not published yet. You can see some prepublication drafts and the index of the published volumes at http://www-bnus.u-strasbg.fr/smt/sommaire.htm Then there is the thesis by Julia Craig-McFeely: http://www.craigmcfeely.force9.co.uk/thesis.html It is reported to be not correct in every detail, but I cannot judge about it.
