Hi Caroline,
I'm a complete beginner too and only manage a brief practice each day, 
and I find that a gut chanterelle will last me for a month, easily 
(usually -- I just had one break after a couple of weeks, but I think 
the weather changes had something to do with that).

It's also possible to mix string types.  I've heard of people with gut 
for courses 2-8, but nylon for the first course, where there is the 
most wear.  That keeps the cost down somewhat.
