dear taco - in earlier correspondence with me concerning the origin of the charango, sebastian nunez expressed the refreshingly down to earth and undogmatic opinion that it probably came from the early, 4 and 5 course guitars. he also quoted from bermudo's "explicacion de instrumentos" by saying that if you put a first and a sixth string to the guitar (the 4 course guitar) you get a vihuela. he further stated that historically, the terms "vihuela" and "guitar" in south america were more or less synonymous.
sounds like a nice, level headed sort of guy. the "creepy crawley" reference from don gonzalo de guerrero hasn't been received well here on the lute or vihuela list. the date is correct and there's mention of don gonzalo in "the conquest of new spain" by bernal diaz but ... according to the experts ... he and everyone else in the colonial period of south america appear not to have known their instruments properly. regards - bill --- Taco Walstra <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > On Tuesday 02 August 2005 13:04, you wrote: > That's an interesting link Roman.
