I assume you meant "clean the strings" instead of
"clean the pegs".
You can clean wound strings with remarkable
(but not perfect) results:
steel core: step 1: boil with detergent
step 2: boil in clear water
nylon core: I don't know. Alcohol, ammonia,
or cool soapy water? Rinse.
