In fact, Hedges claimed to have invented the technique. He first came to attention performing in the courtyard of the old Varsity Theater right here in Palo Alto (California). The area had been turned into a coffee shop. Both Hedges and the theater are no longer with us. Michael passed away some ten years ago, and the movie house has turned into a Borders bookstore.
