It might be less stressful, thumb in that is, provided the extended thumb is
not too long engrained in your technique.  From a musical point of view
thumb in allows a better attack with the fingers on the doubled courses, in
my opinion and experience, having played both ways.

You might also get yourself some Glucosemine and condroitin.  I find this
helps a great deal, especially with the wrists.  But it take a couple of
weeks  taking it before you will start to see a difference.  I know if I
forget to take the product for a few days the wrists start hurting again.
Until you start getting some relief limit your playing to fifteen minutes at
a time, then rest for ten minutes, then play for fifteen again etc.
