Dear All,

Having been involved in performing some of this music when Jon was
developing these ideas, I am also convinced by his arguments and I have
to say we lutenists have really been missing a trick here. The music is
truly excellent, by some of the best composers of the age (Isaac comes
first to mind, but Agricola and others feature strongly too). It does
help if you use different-sized lutes, because then the lines fall
comfortably on the upper courses in low positions on all the lutes - you
don't want to be growling around on the lowest three courses all the
time, or straining yourself playing constantly on frets 10-12.

I also agree with Stewart that tablature is hopeless for this music -
it's so much easier to read ordinary notation. But just for the people
who only read tab, I did a tab version of the Isaac Benedictus for Lute
News a few years ago, for three G lutes. Maybe I should give it to you
all as a Piece of the Month? In the meantime, anyone who would like a
copy can just email me and get a Fronimo file by return.

Best wishes,

Martin
