I enjoyed the "Introducion" by P.Bouquet of the french lute society. It stays fairly long simple and easy which helped in my case to solve the first starting problems. Arto has a good introduction on his webpage, too.
Apart from some general advice I would recommend "just do it". Learn some theory, prepare with some patterns and then try it!
