Dear Ed, I suspect there are Japanese people adhering to the system of classifying according to material of construction as there are such who have adopted the Sachs-system.
I even remember a Japanese co-student of mine once reading us a paper about the adoption of the western harmonic system (following Riemann) to Gagaku music by Japanese musicologists ...
