Here is some physics, which I hope will not be
considered extremely off-topic, given the joys of
sweating on one's lute.

Black has a reputation for being a hot color.
And indeed it is, in the sun.

But black in the shade is a cool color.  
And white in the shade is a  hot color.

As an example, thermos bottles are silvered ("white")
to keep the contents hot.

The relevant area of physics is "blackbody radiation".
It was a major player in the historical beginnings
of quantum mechanics, as common sense began to break
down in the face of experimental results.
