I read about this in the newspaper last week. Kuyken plays these Bach cello suites on kind of very large viola tuned as cello. The instrument is placed against the shoulder with a cord around the neck for support. It could be the original instrument for these suites and perhaps the suites were never written for the standard cello as the standard instrumentation nowadays. Unfortunately almost none of these instruments have survived although they are often depicted on paintings. Just like playing trauerode on mandore or archlute or baroque lute, much music remains a puzzle what kind of 'authentic' instrumentation has been used. In the spirit of early music however the choice of instrumentation was not so important as we think now.
