Dear David and Thomas, Yes, I'm going to try it at first the way Kapsberger suggests, although I may change things around later. I already have some experience with this having played a 16 course theorbo for some time with the f and g sharps at the bottom. No doubt this will be rather difficult at first, but I'm sure I'll get used to it quickly. Klaus Jacobsen says that in the drawing the instrument looks rather like a harp - there are a lot of strings! Also the spacing has to be quite close (which I actually quite like anyway) at exactly 10mm. Otherwise, there would be strings right off the end of the instrument.
But I am really looking forward to it. It will be good to have these notes at one's disposal, and I'm also happy to experiment. Of course, if I don't like it, I can always just take some of the extra diapasons off. I may also consider having some sort of colour-coding for the strings to distinguish between the chromatics and the low f, my lowest "normal" diapason. All let you know how I get on!
