Sacred Aria by Bach Discovered
Unknown Vocal Work Found in Weimar

»Alles mit Gott und nichts ohn’ ihn« BWV 1127
Bach’s rediscovered aria is now available in a practical edition

In May 2005 the Leipzig-based musicologist Michael Maul made a sensational
discovery in Weimar. While sifting through the Herzogin Anna Amalia library he
unearthed the manuscript of a sacred aria by Johann Sebastian Bach which was
previously completely unknown. It is the first time since 1935 that a new Bach
composition has been discovered.

The aria consisting of twelve verses is written for solo soprano, strings and
basso
continuo and opens with the words „Alles mit Gott und nichts ohn’ ihn”. It was
composed in 1713 to celebrate the 53rd birthday of Duke Wilhelm Ernst of Saxe-
Weimar who employed Bach as court organist from 1708 until 1717. This vocal
work
is Bach’s sole contribution to the genre of strophic aria. Each verse is
accompanied by
basso continuo and followed by a lively string ritornello, making this work a
pièce
d’occasion of exquisite quality.

The aria was heard again for the first time on 3 September 2005 in Weimar, with
the
vocal part sung by Juliane Banse and the instrumental parts taken by the
Quatuor
Mosaïques and the well-known pianist András Schiff. Following this première,
musicians all over the world were given an opportunity to perform the "new"
Bach, for
only two days later Bärenreiter issued a performance edition with explanatory
preface
by Michael Maul.

In addition to this Urtext performing edition, Bärenreiter will publish a
facsimile of this
aria, to be presented for the first time in October 2005. This facsimile will
constitute
volume 1 of the new series „Facsimiles of Bach’s Works and Writings” and will
be
published in collaboration with the Bach Archive in Leipzig. The facsimile
includes a
CD with the première recording of the aria. Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducts
the
English Baroque Soloists with Elin Manahan Thomas (soprano).
