95% of the time the music in the operating room is some type of rock or pop. It helps pass the time for others in the OR (anesthesia, nurses) but I find it a distraction that raises the general noise level and reduces concentration. When it's radio, it annoys the hell out of me because there usually are commercials. I have brought lute and other classical CD's in to listen during surgery, but I have mostly given up. For difficult procedures, I always insist on no music (which doesn't make me popular!). Mike Peterson has brought lute music in to surgery with him with more success, but I don't know if he still does it.
