A number of years ago there was a (US) Public Television program
(available on 9 tapes--wish they had dvd!) called the Story of English. A
wonderful series tracing the history of the language from pidgin in
Brittania to modern rap dialect -- including the famous Canadian "eh?".
As I recall, the North (?) Carolina coastal folks with the
Elizabethan dialect were called the "Hoi Toiders" because they pronounced
"high tide" as "hoi toid".

Regards to all,
Leonard Williams
