Posted on behalf of Chris Goodwin, the secretary of the (UK-based) Lute Society:
The latest edition from the Lute Society is 'Music for Lute Consort, circa 1500' edited by Jon Banks. There is strong evidence to suggest that some of the instrumental music found in late 15th century sources such as the Segovia Codex, though not notated in tablature, was intended for lute ensembles. This edition presents in a clear performing score 17 pieces (16 trios and one duet) that work well on three lutes. The music is printed in staff notation, partly because this is how it appears in the original sources, partly because the parts are single lines, without any chords, so tablature is hardly necessary, and partly because the off-beat rhythms which appear from time to time are really easier to grasp in staff notation than in tablature. And of course this means that you can invite friends who play other instruments, such as recorders, to play one of the parts. The trios are printed with the top part in a treble clef, and the lower two parts in (classical guitar style) t! reble clefs an octave down. Presumably the trios were originally performed by trios of lutes of different sizes, but can be played on three G lutes, one of them being of more than 6 courses.
