Chris, you dont say if this Japanese luthier resides in Japan or
elsewhere, but consider the cost of both thewood and delivery of it.

A collegue at work sold an antique radio receiver on ebay recently, and
the buyer was in south korea. It was astonishing how much hassle was
involved in shipping it; just meeting the length + girth requirement was
difficult enough.

Highest grade sitka spruce is not cheap, figured tonewood for the rest of
it can easily go $20/bd ft and more. Ebony is getting hard to find at
all, and is generally priced by the pound.

Perhaps he was thinking of his next lute [design], ie, lots of wood.
