I heard a concert by Ron McFarlane which was semi-amplified.
I'd guess the electronics about doubled total volume.

It sounded fairly natural, since half the sound was actually
from the lutes themselves.  In fact, I might not have thought
"amplified" if I hadn't seen the two mikes on low stands about
6 feet away from him.

So, if you want actual brand/model names, you might try to 
find out what he used.

By the way, distortion is great for electric guitars, but sounds
crummy for voices (and probably lutes).  So, get enough capacity
so you don't have to crank the volume knob.  I'd want a pair
of 12-inch speakers (with matching amp wattage),
