Dear all,

recently I received a message from Aquila concerning the gut strings. He

stopped the production, but you can read it by yourself. I add his message

   to this mail.

I by myself did never use varnished gut strings. I always have been of the

opinion that varnishing is a modern addition to the strings. Varnished

strings may be a bit more resistant against humidity and wearing out. Some

of my clients ordered them, but I always recommended oiled strings.

   regards

   Matthias

   Original Text from Mimmo Peruffo:

   "Dear friends,

We would like to inform our customers that, starting from August 2006, we

are discontinuing the production of varnished gut strings. Thanks to the

constant improvement of our manufacturing know-how and of the raw

materials employed the varnishing of gut strings has become unnecessary.

String varnishing is a modern treatment which was never used historically

(gut strings were kept in olive or almond oil) and its sole purpose is

granting a longer string playing life. But this happens at the cost of

other aspects, the most important being a loss of sound quality,

brightness for example, but also the bowing attack is not as efficient as

with unvarnished gut. The new product we offer instead are semi-rectified

strings (half rectified). We tested these strings for a long time: they

best imitate historic hand- polishing in that they damage only a small

amount of gut fibers as compared with current rectifying methods. The

   advantages are:

an improved stability by climatic changes, longer playing life (similar

   to

those of the vernished ones) and superior acoustical performance.
