Dear all, just a couple of comments, not against anyone:
1) I think that when modulation, change of key, inside a piece became central means of expression in early classisim, the open basses of baroque lutes and theorboes just could not cope with the style anymore. 2) I suppose the technique of playing moderately loud is (and was!) possible. Somehow the modern "hip" - in my opinion - has accepted too soft playing. To say a name: Hoppy plays often very beautifully, but being so soft really needs modern recording technology: they did not have that in 16th, 17th and 18th centuries... I think you really have to be a little "rude" in your playing, ..., well at least not too esoteric... ;-) All the best, Arto To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
