The advice on playing chords (griffes) in Robt.Dowland's "Varietie of Lute
Lessons" is excellent. I play them through the circle of fourths. Ortiz'
"Tratado", Ganassi's "Fontegara" and Christopher Simpson's "Division Viol"
all contain divisions which can be played as exercises through the circle
of fourths. Albert Reyerman's Tree Editions publishes a great set of
exercises for the right hand by Anton Hoger(umlaut over the "o") titled,
"Renaissance Lauten Technik 55 Ubungen Fur Die Rechte Hand". Playing
selected short phrases from pieces by your favorite composer in different
keys and altering the phrases to fit different harmonies is a great execise.
And of course scales are always good.
