Dear Art and All,
If I answered somewhat aside, telling you about the most impressive
dance version that I have ever seen of Lully's Bourgeois Gentilhomme,
the Korean National theatre version or le jeu du Kwi Jok, it is first
because I feel it is quite unfair to judge any performance on an MP3
or Window player quality extract; and secondly as it is an extract,
it does not give a view of the whole, and the possible intentions of
the director. Thirdly, if it is so bad, why not show us something
really good. Look at this pipa player for example, that some on the
French lute list sent me (ok for all I know this may be very average,
I am not a specialist, I call perhaps on David van Ooijen) :

I know this was but a game, but outbursts such as I love Sting, or
Sting stinks, or this sort of nonexplanatory vote has no effect on
the outcome of the final popularity of the work, and gives us no
insight into what an excellent version of this might be.
So again I will answer completely aside, and tell you that I have
recently found (and I am sure I can't be alone) a cross-period
performance which to my mind really does work. It is a performance of
late renaissance early baroque and contemporary music which mixes the
old with the new, and which has bowled me over.
The recording quality is exceptional. It is a Winter & Winter
recording of Vittorio Ghielmi and the gambists of Il suonar Parlante,
called "full of colour".
By moments it reminds me of Maxwell-Davies' work with the Fires of
London, except that the Fires of London begin with a contemporary
sound and then slide across the frontiers of Baroque. Here we begin
firmly in the Renaissance to Baroque but then slide without warning
into the contemporary. I could swear I heard the howlings of a dog,
and certainly the chirping of a monkey. The colours in question
could, by moment; be those of Le Douanier Rousseau.
The program notes are almost non-existent, so at first I thought all
these extraordinary bells, whistles, and howling sounds were coming
from the Gambists, but then more research showed me that Ghelmi had
teemed up with Ernst Reijser, a Dutch cellist who turns his hand to
improvised music and contemporary composition, and who is prone to
playing his cello guitar-like, plucking on either side of the bridge.
What ever, I have taken up this recording as my favourite early
morning accompaniment to my Tai-chi-come-Baroque exercise movements;
another poll like this one, and I will film myself in Window player
format and inflict it on you, and some tell me this is not a pretty
sight!
No real menace meant, I know it was just good fun,
Best
Anthony

Vittorio Ghielmi relies heavilly on the versatility of its
instrument. Showing in a surpsing way that it is possible to alter
the type of sounds that can be produced by this sort of instrument.
With this quartet of viols all sorts of acoustic experimenation has
become possible: they adopt coppery tones, (imitate) the sounds of
viloins, cellos, bells and African instruments; and this does not
prevent the virtuosos of Il Suonar Parlante from defending these
pieces from the late renaissance, with an inventivity, that few
"purist" ensembles would be able to attain.
