The reporter called me for information, and since I'd just heard the excellent Boston MFA lecture on ouds by Peter Kyvelos, I gave him his number. Kyvelos, a third generation luthier, certainly demonstrated his expertise in his lecture, with illustrations played by a local oud virtuoso. His instruments _start_ at $US 6,000. If you ask around it is possible to find places where middle eastern musicans gather. Kyvelos lecture was in part to celebrate the Museum's purchase of an 1899 oud by a very famous maker, Emmanuel Venios. Here is the instrument with a sound bite. (The MFA is taking an interest, whenever possible, in demonstrating the sounds of the old instruments in their collection. There is a CD of Chris Hendriksen playing the Voboam guitar, for example. There is an "audio tour that includes a few pieces played by Chris." Her name is on the instrument. To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
