Hi Ed,

I was surprised to see my name mentioned in the article,
since I'd
contributed so little. The reporter called me for
information, and since
I'd just heard the excellent Boston MFA lecture
on ouds by Peter Kyvelos, I gave him his number.
Kyvelos, a third generation luthier, certainly
demonstrated his expertise in his lecture, with
illustrations played by a local oud virtuoso. His
instruments _start_ at $US 6,000.

If you ask around it is possible to find places where
middle eastern musicans gather.

Kyvelos lecture was in part to celebrate the Museum's
purchase of an 1899 oud by a very famous maker, Emmanuel
Venios. Here is the instrument with a sound bite. (The
MFA is taking an interest, whenever possible, in
demonstrating the sounds of the old instruments in their
collection. There is a CD of Chris Hendriksen playing
the Voboam guitar, for example. There is an "audio
tour that includes a few pieces played by Chris."

The Voboam belonged to a courtier at Versailles. Her
name is on the instrument.
