Howard
Yes, that is the trouble with an e-mail: it is almost like
conversation, but you can't always hear the irony, (au 3ème ou 4ème
degré, as they say in French).

I was jesting, referring to a previous message in which someone
argued that "gut or synthetic, it doesn't matter, since the
difference won't get heard anyway", and I suggested that was a very
dangerous argument, à la Peter Shickele, who jokes that "the lute is
just there because it kinda looks nice"

The "however better not to judge form a YouTube recording" does not
refer to the lute, but to Cecilia Bartoli plus the whole group of
musicians. I think there is a cut-off above a certain frequence (the
low sampling-rate acts as a low-pass filter) and that is certainly
making things worse. I would always reserve judgement on a singer or
a player when listening through YouTube or "Real player".

Sorry to annotate my own message. I may end up having to annotate my
own annotation. Once a message has left you, there is no way you can
keep it under control, it no longer belongs to you …
Regards
Anthony
