While not technically a lute book, Ross Duffin (music professor at Case Western) has published a book on temperment entitled:
How Equal Temperament Ruined Harmony (and Why You Should Care) It is available here at amazon: <http://www.amazon.com/Equal-Temperament-Ruined-Harmony-Should/dp/ 0393062279/sr=8-1/qid=1171162277/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-8479148-9537558? ie=UTF8&s=books> I am mid way through the book. Very entertaining with a minimum of necessary technical jargon. No specific mention of fretted instruments however. Nevertheless, a compelling read for those considering entering the meantone tuning world.
