Dear Alfonso,

Please let us know if you find out more about a facsimile or modern
edition of the Gorzanis song collection. The contents are listed in
H. M. Brown, _Instrumental Music
Printed Before 1600_ (Cambridge, Mass: Harvard University Press,
1965), p. 243. Brown says there is a facsimile of page 9 in MGG V,
col. 535.

I have tried searching on the website of the Italian bookshop, as
suggested by Andrea Damiani, but unfortunately they come up with

NESSUN ELEMENTO TROVATO IN ARCHIVIO!

They have one facsimile of music by Gorzanis, but it's lute solos,
not songs.

You have Denss (1594) on your list. I have been working on many of
the Italian songs in that collection for three voices and lute -
very nice music it is too. You can buy a facsimile from Dr Becker. I
see that Peter Martin has supplied the contact address.

Verovio (1586) was published in facsimile by Forni Editore Bologna,
as Sezione IV N. 38a in their series Bibliotheca Musica Bononiensis.
I don't know if it is still in print.

The psalms arranged by Guillaume Morlaye have been published in a
modern edition by CNRS in 1957, edited by Richard de Morcourt. As I
understand it, the 13 psalms were set for four voices by Pierre
Certon, and these settings were arranged as lute songs by Morlaye.

Tablature de Luth Italienne was published in facsimile by Minkoff.
There are hardly any rhythm signs in the manuscript, so they need a
bit of reconstructing to make them work. Some of the pieces were
included in the Lute Society Journal, edited by Lewis Jones.

Phalèse's _Horti Musarum_ (1553) has been published in facsimile
bound with a facsimile of his _Hortus Musarum_ (1552). It's the 1552
book which would be listed first by booksellers. The facsimile is
no. I in the series Thesaurus Musicus, edited by Albert Vander
Linden, and the contact address is given as 1050 Bruxelles, Office
International de Librairie, Avenue Marnix 30.

I think one of the Gastoldi collections was published in Hungary by
the same people who published the collected works of Bakfark, i.e.
Editio Musica Budapest. After a long search, I can't find my copy at
home, so I can't check it out. They may have a website, I don't
know.

A modern anthology of pieces from Attaingnant (1529), Phalèse
(1553), and Adrian Le Roy (1571) is _Chansons au Luth et Airs de
Cour Français du XVIe Siècle_, with an introduction by Lionel de la
Laurencie, transcribed by Adrienne Mairy, and a commentary and study
of the sources by G. Thibault (Paris: Heugel, 1976). All 22 songs
include the accompaniment in tablature, as well as a staff notation
transcription.

Good luck with your quest.

Best wishes,

Stewart McCoy.
