I don't know about Europe, but the last time I flew to Cleveland for LSA
(from Seattle), I was able to put my lute in the overhead without problems.
Two caveats, though:

>It was a 6-course alto, so it was on the small side and fit quite
comfortably in the overhead. My 8-course probably wouldn't fit, but it's a
62cm instrument and in a large case (I think it was actually designed to
accommodate a 10-course).

>It was debatable whether it met the carry-on requirements. It's a little
hard to tell, since they are written for rectilinear objects. The attendants
didn't choose to make an issue of it, but they probably could have. I smiled
a lot and acted like carrying a lute onboard was no more unusual than a
briefcase.

It's probably wise to be prepared to hand the instrument over at the gate if
they aren't in a cooperative mood.

I am wondering what the experience has been in the past for people flying to
LSA w.r.t being able to get their lutes (mine being a conventional size 8
course) in the overhead compartment, or whether this is a lost cause.
