OK,

A few of questions:

If tables were used then,

Would the Lutenist be stood or sat.
How would the Lute be supported? With a strap around the neck?
If not supported by a strap how does the Lutenist stop the Lute from
sliding around? If you place a leather underneath to gain grip on the
table, wouldn't this kill any resonance gained from using a table.
Finally what about position and angle of the instrument? I should
imagine it would be difficult to maintain a comfortable playing
position.

Just my 2 Fergs from Diablo's advocate.

The discussion was about the use of a table in supporting the lute.
There
are many icongraphical, as well as documented references to using a
table
to support the instrument. In using a nice wooden table, it even can
act
as sound enhancement or reinforcement, making the lute more projective.
