I supose the virtue would be proven best in trials.  Having a stiff edge
might increase the amplitude of reflcted vibrations, a purfling allows the
top itself to vibrate more freely, the two are different issues in my
mind.

More an issue tho is materiel, normally the endclasp is made from that
extra rib left over from a set for the back.  If it had to be as long as
would go round the whole instrument, that would be at least 2x the length
of one rib, and would complicate the getting of sets from a log.
