I supose the virtue would be proven best in trials. Having a stiff edge might increase the amplitude of reflcted vibrations, a purfling allows the top itself to vibrate more freely, the two are different issues in my mind. More an issue tho is materiel, normally the endclasp is made from that extra rib left over from a set for the back.
