Hera,
I don't know... I do wonder why someone like POD
chose to focus his attention on these works, which, as
has been mentioned, have been recorded many, many
times? There's SO much music out there that hasn't
been recorded that needs attention! O'Dette has taken
many chances with recording little-known renaissance
music - why not do the same for baroque lute? Maybe
he will in the future... (I asked him about his
plans. He said he would like to do an album of French
11-course music.)
I have to say this CD is not on my list of
"must-haves" right now. I'll probably buy it someday
just for the sake of having Paul's interpretation, but
there are so many other CDs with this same repertoire
that other recordings will have priority for me at the
moment.
I saw POD perform the program on this CD live last
year. (He also played the Weiss C minor Fantasie)
The concert was of course very good, but I wasn't
especially impressed in the scheme of things. (My
guitar students all said it was absolutely the most
boring concert to which they'd ever been! What do
they know???) I saw him perform again two months
later playing a program of all-Melchior Neusidler on
ren. lute and was totally blown away.
