Dear Hera Caius,

See Dick Hoban's re-intabulkation of the Lauten-Buch
that Chilesotti published in transcrption.

http://www.mclasen.com/lute/lyre/index.html#chilesotti

It is No. 50, Villanella: "E dirgli: Orlando fa'che ti
raccordi" It is a Bradimarte's farewell in _Orlando
furioso._ I think it is one of the most beautiful
pieces of the Renaissance. Chilesotti published this
German (Bavarian) manuscript as _Da un Codice
Lauten-Buch del Cinquecento_ (Brussels and Leipzig,
[1890]). He also published it as a song
with "pianoforte" accompaniment in an anthololgy. I do
not know the source for the vocal original, and do not
have the necessary reference tools at home to go hunting
for it.
But it seems to be SATB, and could be reconstructed from
Chilesotti's
transcprtion from tablature. The Lauten-Buch is the
only source known to me. I surely would like to see it
some day. The original manuscript is reportedly now in
a private
library in northern Italy. (It was the house next door
to Chilesotti's residence that burned down.)

Charlotte took a look, and was also unable to find
references to a vocal original. That makes me
suspicious that Chilesotti may have added the text to an
untexted piece, or ottava rime formula. (In the
Lauten-Buch the lyrics are
underlaid, but not (iirc) in Hoban's tablature edition.)

Chilesotti made some changes in his editions.<sigh> So
he cannot be
trusted. For ex., he changed all the pieces titled
"Tanz" to "Danza."

Here's another piece that would be on my list of the
most beautiful pieces of Renaissance lute music:

It's Ricercar No. 3 by Marco dall'Aquila,

And good luck in Basel. What an exciting prospect for
you to study with Hoppy!!!

AJN.
