Andy,

don't buy the cheap stuff from Pakistan (Hobgoblin). Really! I don't know if 
the no-name lutes 
sold by EMS are any better, but I would advise to save your money and get a 
student lute by 
(e.g.) Ed Greenhood in the US, Renzo Salvador in Belgium, Kai Schupp or Renatus 
lechner 
in Germany, György Lorinzi in Romania or Luciano Faria in Brasil. If you can 
get a used 
student lute it will become even cheaper (maybe through Wayne Cripps' webside 
or the site 
of the english lute society) . And you can still sell it if you want to upgrade 
to a better modell. 
Those cheapo lutes of unknown origin are hard to sell again, and they really 
make no fun.
