Hi Markus I guess you could use Open Office to do this kind of thing, but I dont have any experience of writing custom software applications in Open Office, hence I used Excel. Open Office is quite heavyweight in my opinion, perhaps a better solution in the long run would be to use a Grid component that did not require any spreadsheet to be installed.
I chose Excel because I was familiar with it and I thought it would be reasonably common on users' machines.
