There is, of course, a track on Laute-galanterie by Anthony Bailes LP
Reflexe. Initially, I did not like this record, whereas I loved his
Pieces de Luth in the same series. In fact, it is much less well
recorded, and the historic lute perhaps a little lacking in certain
areas; but careful listening makes me hear how important the decay of
notes, and pauses are in this galant music. Anthony Bailes carries
this out well, but the recording fails to allow full appreciation of it.
Indeed, most of us know how recordings tend to lose the last gasp of
a decay. It is this sort of microdynamic detail that makes this
particular music interesting, without it, it can indeed be boring.
Well that is how I feel about it, so perhaps a live performance with
a good acoustics could make all the difference. Certainly, I doubt
whether MP3 could do it justice.
Regards
Anthony
