Everyone has raised good points on the topic of audibility on hearing lutes 
in performance settings.

One thing, many, many lutenists used the "table", where leaning the edge of 
a lute on a table amplified the sound.  This topic has previously been 
discussed, and Chris Morongiello gave a talk on this topic, along with 
demonstrations, at the LSA festival in Cleveland, 2006.  He pointed out, 
and proved, that this was done, and it is effective as well.
