Dear Wolfgang,

I'm quite surprised that you were surprised! I have always been amazed by the churches where I have heard music. So often somebody decides to try and introduce the works from the platform and it is totally inaudible, making one fear the worst, but when the music starts it is not only audible but clear and full. As I have never been to a church for its intended purpose, it makes me wonder about the sermons and readings - perhaps that is why pulpits are where they are.

Tony

Subject: [LUTE] not amplified

hello all,
we just finished our 2. luteplayers days here in cottbus/germany this weekend. we had to play in the large gothic church st. nicolai. length: 71 m; width: 22 m and higth: 20 m.
some impressions on
http://www.musik-oberkirche.de/
first i thought thats horror pure! we were placed under a wonderful wooden lectern (baroque, in the colors of white, gold and blue...)on a small podest. the accustic for our lutes, recorders and voices was wonderful. audible in the whole room.
we did the music for the service:
udo (from berlin) was walking with his medival lute as beginning from the baptism-chapel to our podest playing 2 pieces from macheaut. beautiful the different lute projection during his walking. after the first lecture lothar and josephine (both from berlin) played 3 chorals from robinsons school (recorder and lute) before sermon ursula (from hamburg) sang the bossinensis "in te domine" accompanied by klaus (from dresden) on the lute, who followed with the intabulation of this song from the schencking stammbuch. after the sermon i played the "in te domine" intabulation from the wroclaw ms 352. mathias rösel wrote for our meeting (mille gracias mathias!!!!! schade, dass du nicht dabei warst) the lute part for "du meine seele singe" on a poem of paul gerhardt, a famous baroque poet, who is burried in luebben near cottbus (we are celebrating this year his 400th birthday). gisela (from hamburg) and klaus did this. the lord´s supper was accompanied by gisela with a recorder solo: van eyck´s "onse vader in hemelryck". at the end i played 3 scottish pieces from the rovallan lute book and we (ursula and myself) closed with the last three verse of the famous paul gerhardt song " nun danket all und bringet ehr", mathias wrote a wonderful flowing lutepart for this. especially the last verse

"Er drücke, wenn das Herze bricht,
uns unsre Augen zu
und zeig uns drauf sein Angesicht
dort in der ewgen Ruh."
was a very emotial moment for me.
(he posted this 2 songs to the yahoo fronimo group)

after this we played a lot of secular music (werner from hamburg played dalza!) see: http://lutecast.blogspot.com/
and my vocal ensemble "amaryllis" sang 4 madrigal in an 1 hour matinee.

not amplified! its possible!not amplified! its possible!not amplified! its possible!not amplified! its possible!
cordial greetings from germany
wolfgang w.
