Check out Victor Villadangos's rendition of "El Dia Que Me Quieras" on Tango Argentino: Naxos "Guitar Collection" 8.555721. Very nice stuff, and evidence that Gardel is still revered today in Argentina and beyond. But, as I mentioned earlier, with Piazzolla it depends on who you listen to. For example, I have a recording of L'Histoire Du Tango (a favorite piece of mine) played by Irmgard Toepper (no small potatoes in the flute world) and guitarist Hugo German. Brilliantly played but really not enough in the way of Tango. I haver another recording of the same piece by Immanuel Pahud and Manuel Barrueco which absolutely crackels with ryhthm!! Viva Gardel!
