Subject: [LUTE] Re: Brescianello (was) Re: mandora/gallichon
music
His library of music, the largest to survive intact from the
18th
century, has some 300 pieces for lute, alone. The library was
inherited
by his daughter Princess Luise Frederika, an accomplished
lutenist and
coloratura, who brought the collection to Rostock (it is now
in
the University Library). It demonstrates the
currency of lute and lute music at the Stuttgart court.
Can you tell us more about this manuscript? I have heard that
it is an
important source of late lute music, but I would love to learn
more!

Dear Are,
Stay tuned! I mis-counted. There are well over 500 lute piece,
in several manuscripts, plus an extremely large collection of
unbound sheet music. In dreadful disorder. It does not all
_*originate*_ with
Princesse Luise Frederika of Württemberg, and some pieces date
from before she was born; in fact one very important manuscript
dates from the 17th century. None of the lute music was copied
after her marriage and removal to northern Germany (Schwerin).
JAFWeiss played for her, but none of his music is contained in
the manuscipts. Neemann was looking too hard.<g> The pieces he
wishes to connect tp JAFW are by Schwinghammer, a Stuttgart
teacher of fencing and lute. Apparently Princess Luise's
teacher.
The manuscripts contain works by Weiss, Pichler, Daube, Telemann,
Spurny, Lauffensteiner, Pinel, Dubut, Dufaut, Merville, Mercure
et al.
Stay tuned!
