Strumming: If we think of it; they thought of it. Whether they liked it or not is hard to say. Perhaps the answer lies in the distribution of table tennis rackets (or "bats"). For example, people debate whether seven courses were used early on. And the confusing thing, is that the pros must have used different gear than the rest. Similarly, if we were to look at all the surviving ping pong rackets from the 20th century (a large number, including the "household inventories" or garages, if you will), we would conclude that the players had holes in their rackets, and be pressed to explain this. But if we had the rackets from Hsi En Ting, or Stellan Bengtsson, we would see that the pros had special gear. And that each was highly personalized. Just as the style of play. And so it must be with strumming. It is, after all, strumming. dt
