That's # GM:3885 in Goteborg that you link to. http://carlotta.gotlib.goteborg.se/zoom/534/GM_3885_bild1.jpg Here's some closeups: http://tinyurl.com/5pn4uj
Here's another similar instrument, # GM:3889 http://tinyurl.com/5dn6bg They seem to have an abundant supply in Sweden. # GM:3889 is the instrument pictured in Ruggiero Chiesa's edition of the "gallichone" partitas by Brescianello, called colascione by Chiesa. He is among the many who have confused the colascione with the galichon. The museum calls both instruments mandoras. I have often wondered if # GM:3889 is a fake made up out of discarded parts from several instruments. Was it a stage prop for commedia dell'arte? The rosette looks to be painted on (in Chiesa's photos), like some other decorations. The fingerboard seems too narrow for all those strings (I count 11 pegs) tied to that bridge. The neck looks like one of my great-grandmother's bed posts.<g> =====AJN (Boston, Mass.)===== Free Download of the Week from the Classical Music Library Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47 To download, click on the CML link here http://mysite.verizon.net/arthurjness/ My Web Page: Scores http://mysite.verizon.net/vzepq31c/arthurjnesslutescores/ Other Matters: http://mysite.verizon.net/arthurjness/ =================================== ----- Original Message ----- From: "Roman Turovsky" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; "Lutelist" <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, July 27, 2008 9:16 AM Subject: [LUTE] Re: what the heck is this instrument? | Too many courses. | RT | | > Hello !! | > it looks like a colascione .... | > xx H.V | > | > | > --- On Sun, 7/27/08, Roman Turovsky <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: | > | >> From: Roman Turovsky <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> | >> Subject: [LUTE] what the heck is this instrument? | >> To: "Lutelist" <[email protected]> | >> Date: Sunday, July 27, 2008, 12:36 PM | >> http://carlotta.gotlib.goteborg.se/zoom/534/GM_3885_bild1.jpg | >> | >> RT | >> | >> | >> | >> To get on or off this list see list information at | >> http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html | > | > | > | > | > | | |
